Trigger padded over the soft dirt, trying his best not to make a noise. He had reported to Riyu this morning for her latest job for him, but what happened yesterday at the lake- he still didn't know how to explain it- must have spooked her, at least temporarily, because she just gave him a frightened look and told him he had the day off. He still felt bad. As soon as Rinn had led her twin sister back to the camp, Riyu had collapsed again, and wasn't able to move her legs. She managed to stand up again this morning, but Rinn had cried herself to sleep last night from worry. They were mean, and petty, and hated him simply for things that had mostly happened before he was even born, but they were still his sisters, and they did love eachother (even though they still hated him) but Trigger hated causing pain so much that more often than not, he ate vegetation rather than hunting if he could avoid it. He kept telling himself that once the shock wore off, it...whatever "it" was, would just become another thing for them to hate him for.
Which, for reasons he couldn't really explain was comforting.
He flattened his ears against his head and inhaled deeply, enjoying the fair weather. It was still early, the sun wasbarely above the horizon, but it was warm all the same. Or maybe he was just near the scorched plains. He really couldn't tell. He had been wandering aimlessly since he left camp and had no idea where he was.
His train of thought was interrupted by a sudden snap of a twig somewhere and a bush rustling. His fur fluffed out in fear. It was the alliance of the day, wasn't it?! They were coming to take him captive! It was obviously not his father, who wouldn't be up untill his first patrol, which wasn't untill noon. Not that the leader of the dark guardians was lazy, but the excitement of yesterday had left them all exhausted.
He thought he was going to pass out with relief when he saw that it was just a rabbit, which wandered into the clearing, saw Trigger and ran for it's life. Trigger hadn't meant to scare it, but years of instincts being finely tuned from being hunted had left the small mammals of the island naturally suspicious of guardians.
Trigger couldn't helpfhinking how much he was like a rabbit, terrified of every little sound or out-of-place detail, thinking things through to the poit that they seemed much worse than they actually were, and suspicious and frightened of everyone...even his own kind...
Speaking of which, when there was the sound of pawsteps, he was almost tempted to think it was another rabbit, but the pawsteps were too heavy. Trigger's heart started beating fast and he suddenly felt like a trapped rabbit all over again.
